Description: The reddish coquilla nut carved in the shape of a well-dressed walking man with top hat, striped pants holding his jacket open with both hands, the exposed vest has six bone buttons and his long formal jacket has three bone buttons on the left side and two on the back, his face has
amusing
bulging and lopsided two-color glass eyes, the back side of the figure
forming
a long hinged lid to the snuff opening.
Condition: Good condition with a very nice rich color and patina. A few shrinkage splits due to age and the hinged lid closes completely.

Depth = 3.5 cm (1.3")
Note: The coquilla nut emanates from swampy areas on the eastern side of South America, from a palm known as the "attelea funiefera". Brazilians call it "Piassabe". The nuts were introduced into Western Europe in the mid-16th century, and used for small carved objects until the end of the 19th century.
